When their shared hippie girlfriend, O (Blake Lively), is kidnapped, two marijuana growers — University of California, Berkeley graduate Ben (Aaron Johnson) and former U.S. Navy SEAL Chon (Taylor Kitsch) — confront a Mexican drug cartel (led by Salma Hayek and Benicio del Toro) to rescue her. Uma Thurman plays O's mother and John Travolta plays a DEA agent.
By August 2011, the film was shooting in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. The film entered post-production in October 2011.
Jennifer Lawrence was originally cast as O, but dropped out to film The Hunger Games instead. Other actresses considered for the part included Olivia Wilde, Blake Lively, Teresa Palmer and Abbie Cornish. In April 2011, it was reported that Lively had joined the film.
