Pere Portabella i Ràfols (Catalan pronunciation: [ˈpeɾə ˌpɔrtəˈβeʎə j ˈrafuɫs]) (born 11 November, 1929 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain) is a Catalan experimental filmmaker, artist and politician.
He first achieved notoriety as the producer of Luis Buñuel's Viridiana; his connection with the controversial film caused him trouble with the Francoist government, which eventually lead to his passport being taken away.
Portabella has completed 10 features to date, the most recent being 2007's Die Stille vor Bach. He frequently collaborates with composer Carles Santos.
Portabella was elected as a senator during Spain's first democratic elections in 1977 and participated in the writing of the Spanish Constitution. He has also been a member of the Parliament of Catalonia. Since 2001 Pere Portabella is the president of Fundación Alternativas, one of the most important left-wing think tank of Spain.
